Oral Retelling

Today students worked in their book club groups to retell the important events in their story.  They used their retelling gloves to reinforce using sequence words such as first, then, next, after, and finally.  After practicing with their book club group, the students independently completed a written retelling of their book.  We all agreed that oral retellings are much easier, but our goal is to improve our written retelling.  In order to compare the written vs. oral retelling, I recorded each student giving an oral retelling of their story.  Take a look and see how wonderful the oral retellings are. Keep in mind, it is not easy to retell the story when the teacher is staring at you with the camera!

Koko's Kitten

This week in our book club groups we are working on interpreting the character's problems by putting ourselves in the main characters shoes.  To practice this skill before applying it to our book club books, we read the story, "Koko's Kitten."  Please see the video to see what social issues Koko faces and how we identified Koko's problem.
